Our Biggest Skydiving Flag Yet: A 7,000 Square Foot Jump Flag

After more than three decades of making flags, it’s still pretty incredible to watch thousands of square feet of fabric that passed through our hands unfurl in the sky.

This one was 7,000 square feet.

We’re pretty proud to say: we made that.

We’ve made some pretty big flags over the last 30+ years, but this skydiving flag is hard to beat.

Our team at Sunward Flag had the opportunity to make a massive 7,000-square-foot Union Jack jump flag for the Red Devils, the British Army’s parachute display team. We were incredibly proud to take this one on.

And when we say big, we mean really big.

The flag was so large that our San Diego flag shop didn’t have enough open floor space to lay the whole thing out. For the pinning process, we rented a local union hall so our team could spread out all 7,000 square feet at once, carefully line up the sections, and pin the enormous flag together before sewing.

Seeing the entire Union Jack stretched across the hall floor was one of those moments where we realized just how wild this project actually was.

Once finished, the flag went from a union hall floor in San Diego to the sky, where it was jumped by the Red Devils.

A large skydiving flag or jump flag is a very different project from a traditional flag made for a flagpole. Size, weight, reinforcement, attachment points, and how the fabric behaves in the air all become part of the construction process.
